History of Minecraft

This page talks through a quick history of Minecraft.

2009

The first ever version of Minecraft was released on May 17th, 2009, by Markus "Notch" Persson. It was originally called "Cave Game" but the community began to call it "Minecraft".

2010

2010 was a special year for Minecraft. It was the year that the first major update for Minecraft was released. The game has officially entered Alpha.

2011

  • Nether is added.
  • Minecraft is officially in its beta stage.
  • The first ever Minecon was held in Las Vegas
  • Minecraft PE is released! (only true OGs remember)
  • Minecraft hits 1,000,000 users! The 1,000,000th user got a cool cape.

    • 2012

    Minecraft for Xbox 360 is released.

    2013

    2013 was a relatively quiet year. Mostly minor updates were made and no milestones were reached.

    2014

  • Microsoft buys Minecraft
  • Minecraft is now the bestselling PC game!
  • 20 million sales!

    • 2015-2018

    Beta phase is ended. Ender Dragon added.

    2019

    10 years of Minecraft!
